Introduction to Interior Design

1. The Sketchbook of Interior Design

Kick-start your interior design journey by exploring what it means to be an interior designer and understanding the profession as a whole. We’ll delve into the importance of communication in interior design, including tools and techniques that designers use daily.

Did you know that different design personalities exist? In this lesson, we’ll discover your design personality before introducing basic design terminologies. You'll also begin sketching, learning the critical elements to consider when putting pen to paper. The importance of sketching will be highlighted through hand-drawn and digital sketches. Bring your sketchbooks along as we start getting creative!

2. The Plan

Welcome to the floor plan, the foundation of any interior design project. This lesson introduces space planning (which will be further explored in Module 3) and explains why floor plans are essential in design. You’ll learn:

  • How to read and interpret floor plans
  • What a floor plan should include
  • The tools needed to draw one

Finally, you’ll begin constructing your very own floor plans!

3. Design Section in Elevation

Understanding sections and elevations is crucial in interior design. In this lesson, you’ll learn:

  • What sections and elevations are
  • How to draw these detailed technical drawings
  • The tools and software commonly used in the industry (covered in more depth in Modules 3 and 4)

Building on your floor plan knowledge, you’ll follow a step-by-step approach to hand-drawing an elevation—a must-have skill for interior designers.

4. The Principles of Design

This lesson will take your design knowledge to the next level as we differentiate between:

  • The 7 Elements of Design: Line, color, form, light, pattern, texture, space
  • The Principles of Design: Balance, emphasis, contrast, rhythm, scale & proportion, detail, harmony & unity

We’ll examine how these elements influence design principles, helping you spot and create stunning interior designs like never before.

5. A View in Perspective

A favorite among interior designers—the perspective (3D) view. In this lesson, you’ll:

  • Learn about 1-point perspective drawings
  • Understand how perspective views enhance design communication
  • Discover different types of perspective drawings and their applications

By the end, you'll have created your own hand-drawn 1-point perspective sketch!

6. Getting to Grips with Style

Let’s talk style—yours versus your client’s. We’ll explore how to:

  • Identify personal and client design styles
  • Implement styles into projects effectively
  • Analyze key design influences and trends

We’ll also dive into popular interior design styles, including:

  • Contemporary
  • Modern
  • Minimalist
  • Traditional and many more

7. Let’s Get Colouring

Colour has a profound psychological impact on space, and in this lesson, we’ll break down how to use it effectively. You’ll learn:

  • The colour wheel and how to apply it
  • How to combine colours harmoniously
  • The difference between hand-rendering and computer rendering

This hands-on lesson will have you creating your own colour wheel and rendering designs, making it one of the most exciting lessons yet!

8. It’s All in the Timeline

Ever wondered how interior design has evolved over time? This lesson takes you through:

  • The historical timeline of interior design
  • How different eras have influenced modern design
  • Iconic styles and periods, including Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, and Colonial Revival
